The Seishun 18 Kippu is a special train ticket that can be used during certain times in Japan. It is a flat price of 11,850 JPY (~$115 USD) and allows travel for up to five, non-consecutive or consecutive 24-hour periods on the JR lines throughout the country. When using it, the stationmaster will stamp the ticket with a date stamp. You are free to use any JR lines throughout the day from then on with that stamp.

Seishun 18 Kippu Perks

  1. The ticket can be split up to 5 people, as more than one person can use the ticket on a single day; the ticket must be stamped for as many days as there are people using it.
  2. Residents and visitors can purchase and use this ticket. Unlike the Japan Rail Pass, which can only be used by tourists, anyone and everyone can use the Seishun 18 Kippu.
  3. You can purchase more than one ticket throughout the validity period and use them as much as you would like.

Seishun 18 Kippu Value

Each use is valued at 2,370 JPY.

Ticket price [11,850] divided by number of uses [5] means each day = [2,370]

If your travel total is more than 2,370 JPY on JR lines in one day, you break even with the price you paid for the Seishun 18 Kippu. Depending on travel plans, this could be a really great option!

Seishun 18 Kippu Validity Periods

Spring: March 1st – April 10th (on sale February 20th – March 31st)

Summer: July 20th – September 10th (on sale July 1st – August 31st)

Winter: December 10th – January 10th (on sale December 1st – December 31st)

The validity periods coincide with Japan’s school breaks. The summer ticket’s validity period starts and ends just after and before national holidays, which is a little inconvenient because it would be more useful if either one of those holidays were included. However, the Seishun 18 Kippu can be incredibly useful and save you a decent amount of money when planing accordingly.

These tickets can be purchased at most JR stations throughout Japan.
