Why Spring is the Best Season in Japan

#1. Sakura: What makes spring special in Japan are the cherry blossoms, known as “sakura” in Japanese. The sakura start blooming in the south in Okinawa and make their way north to Hokkaido between February through May.
#2. Spring flavors: Many restaurants, bakeries, and patisseries feature special sakura-inspired menu items to celebrate the season. Sakura ice cream, manju, Pocky Sticks, and more can be found across Japan. Be sure to sample some of these seasonal treats!
#3. Weather: Spring is a beautiful season with its weather mild, warm temperatures, and sunny days. It’s quite comfortable for going on walks, hiking, and being outdoors.
#4. Fresh energy: Spring puts some pep in everyone’s step, but April marks the beginning of a new year in Japan for schools and businesses. It’s a time of change and rejuvenation that can be felt everywhere.
#5. More sunlight: After all of those dark winter days, it’s nice to wake up to sunshine. The sun isn’t up too, too early (like in the summer months), giving the days a balanced feel.
If you’re planning to visit Japan, I highly recommend coming during April or May. Other than the reasons listed above, flights tends to be more affordable and you won’t need to pack too much clothing-wise. However, April 29th through May 5th is known as a period called “Golden Week,” in which many people have time off from school and work. This national holiday causes accommodation and flight prices to surge and crowds to increase in many places. It is best to avoid visiting during this time due to the holiday chaos.
