Over the past year or so I embarked on a minimalist journey of sorts. I decluttered spaces, purged unused wardrobe items, and became deliberate about purchases. Minimizing made me feel refreshed, energized, and renewed; it was a positive experience. I learned how to experience more through consuming less, about the value of traveling to new places without spending tons of money, and how to appreciate the “little things” in life. Through minimalism I was able to focus more on what I felt was important—people in my life; goals for myself and my future; passions like traveling, trying new foods, and photography—while freeing up mental space to combat personal problems. From my experiences, here are some positives that I feel minimalism can create:
Pros of Minimalism
- Less material and mental clutter >> more mental clarity; more time for introspection
- Less impulsive spending >> more money saved
- Fewer items >> more organization
- Simplicity >> less = more
- Purposeful purchases, thoughts, practices, and behaviors
- Focus on passions, health, hobbies, and relationships
I’ve garnered much of my inspiration, motivation, and knowledge about minimalism through videos, blogs, and podcasts. If you’re looking for a place to start, I recommend checking out these three awesome women:
1. Marie Kondo (and her KonMari Method)
2. Lavendaire (YouTube, blogs, & more)
3. Jenny Mustard (YouTube, blogs, & more)
Even though it has been challenging mental and emotional process, I feel minimalism truly has helped me become a better version of myself through trials, tribulations, and consistent bouts of reflection! Moreover, minimalism has given me the opportunity to recenter and learn about what I feel is important in life. It is definitely an ongoing journey, and an experience I am thankful to have discovered. I hope minimalism—in any shape or form—can have a similar impact on you and in your life!
Peace & happy living,
Tay
