Aside from the obvious (passport, cash, credit cards, headphones, chargers, etc.), I always make sure I have these 5 travel items.

Pen: This seems trivial, but I hate not having a pen. They’re important when filling out immigration and customs forms, and it really never hurts to have one.

Pocket tissues: No toilet paper? No napkins? No problem! Pocket tissues are a must, as most public places tend to either not have toilet paper or run out of it. They’re handy for cleaning up spills, using as napkins, and blowing your nose, too.

Earplugs: Hostels, planes, buses, trains… any shared space can be noisy. Earplugs help cut out the noise and allow me to sleep in peace or simply focus on my work without distraction.

Bandana: A reusable and washable bandana seems old-fashioned, but it’s a multipurpose piece that barely takes up bag space. Great for dabbing sweat, keeping hair off your face, soaking in cold water and wrapping around your neck, acting as an eye mask…the list goes on.

Jacket or flannel: Even when it’s the hottest time of the year, I always pack a jacket or flannel in my carry-on. Planes can be unexpectedly cold, as can airports. Also, folding it to use as a makeshift pillow or neck rest works well when in a bind.
