Kilkenny (in Irish “Cill Chainnigh”) is a town in southeast Ireland known for its medieval ruins, castles, and churches. Not far from Dublin, Kilkenny is easily accessible via bus or train. Spend a day in the Irish countryside, taking in the town’s historic charm by visiting famous sites such as Kilkenny Castle and the Cathedral Church of St. Canice. Marvel at the stunning stained glass pieces and enjoy walking along quaint stone streets.

How to Get to Kilkenny

From the Dublin City Center, you can catch a Dublin Coach bus from Burgh Quay that arrives at Ormonde Road in Kilkenny. My friend and I took the 10:00 am bus from Dublin, which arrived in Kilkenny at 11:45 am. We passed lots of green pastures, sheep, and cows along the way. Plan your trip and book tickets online at Dublin Coach by [clicking here].

As of January 2022, one-way tickets are 10 EUR while round-trip fare is 20 EUR.

How Much Time to Budget

4-6 hours is a good amount of time to budget for Kilkenny. This will give you enough time to see many of the sites as well as enjoy a coffee or pint and have a sit-down lunch.

Our return bus departed Kilkenny at 5:40 pm, dropping us back off in Dublin City Center around 7:00/7:30 pm. This was the perfect amount of time for us to explore the town at a leisurely pace without being rushed.

St. Canice Cathedral is absolutely amazing.

Where to Visit in Kilkenny

  1. Kilkenny Castle
  2. Cathedral Church of St. Canice and Round Tower
  3. St. Mary’s
  4. The Black Abbey
  5. St. Francis Church

Travel tip: Climb the Round Tower at the Cathedral Church of St. Canice! The panoramic view from the top is stunning on a clear day.

Food and Drink

If you’re in the mood for coffee and something sweet, be sure to stop at La Bottega. This Italian cafe, deli, and market has phenomenal desserts! For those who prefer a pint over a coffee, order a Smithwick’s–the beer of Kilkenny–at Billy Byrnes or Brewery Corner.

The tiramisu at La Bottega is heavenly.

Peace & happy travels,

Tay
