The Berkshires is a rural region in the mountains of Western Massachusetts known for its natural beauty and collection of charming small towns. The area is a popular vacation destination with plenty of activities throughout the year, from fall foliage-viewing to ski resorts, in addition to farm-to-table cuisine and renowned arts institutions. Only a couple of hours from New York City and Boston, the Berkshires are a wonderful weekend escape.

In the summer, explore the windy dirt roads and appreciate the region’s natural beauty.

Activities & Places to Visit

For an amazing view of the surrounding area, a morning or afternoon hike at Monument Mountain will do the soul good. I recommend going up the left trail rather than the right, as it’s less of an incline. Be sure to wear a sturdy pair of shoes, bring a water canteen, and some snacks–getting to the top can take about one hour or so. For something less strenuous but just a beautiful, the Berkshire Botanical Gardens is the perfect place to admire flowers and plants between May and October.

Stretch out and embrace mindfulness for the day at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, where they provide retreats and wellness services on their stunning 450-acre campus. For day-spa services, schedule a massage or facial at Canyon Ranch, the Cranwell, or Seven Salon Spa–all are absolutely amazing if you’re seeking a pathway to relaxation.

If you’re interested in the arts, buy tickets to a concert or event at Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 1937. The Norman Rockwell Museum is nearby Tanglewood, where you can learn about Rockwell’s life and view some of his famous pieces. The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) is a museum in a converted factory complex in North Adams. It’s one of the largest centers for contemporary visual art and performing arts in the country, where shows and events are hosted throughout the year in addition to the works on display.

Travel tip #1: Magic Wings Butterfly Conservation in Deerfield, Massachusetts is quite a drive from The Berkshires, but is well worth a visit, even in the colder months!

Places to Eat & Drink

Great Barrington is my personal favorite town in the Berkshires. If you’re there, take a stroll along Railroad Street. Here you’ll find numerous restaurants and quaint shops. Stop at Marjoram + Roux for delicious pastries, sandwiches, and salads made with fresh, local ingredients. Opt for American foods alongside awesome cocktails at Prairie Whale or Japanese cuisine from Bizen–their sashimi and sushi is some of the best in the area. If you’re looking for something sweet, SoCo Creamery has you covered with their classic and seasonal ice cream flavors.

If you’re looking for more upscale dining experiences, definitely head into Lenox. Alongside the main street there are a variety of restaurants and wine bars, including my personal favorite: Brava. (Parking can be a bit tricky on evenings and weekends, but it’s definitely worthwhile.) Alta and Bistro Zinc are fantastic alternatives if Brava is a bit too busy. For something more casual, Haven and On A Roll Cafe both serve sublime sandwiches and salads.

Travel tip #2: Other places for tasty yet casual meals include: Starving Artist Creperie and Cafe in Lee, No. Six Depot in West Stockbridge, and Once Upon a Table in Stockbridge. Grab a coffee at Stockbridge Coffee & Tea or choose from a great selection of beers at either Great Barrington Brewery or Roe Jan Brewery in Hillsdale.
