Saint Augustine is a small city on the northeastern coast of Florida. It is supposedly the oldest settled city in the United States with Spanish explorers founding the city in 1565. The Spaniards brought pieces of their home country to Saint Augustine, including language, food, and architecture.
My friend took me to Saint Augustine to appreciate the city’s beautiful buildings, unique history, yummy food, and cute streets. I would say that it was one of my favorite places while visiting Florida because of its laidback vibes and pretty spaces. Below are some things I recommend doing while there if you’re limited to a single day.
Saint Augustine Activity Recommendations
- Old Jail Tour
- St. George Street
- Wine tasting at San Sebastian Winery
- Take the Hop-On, Hop-Off Trolley
- Sample chocolate at Whetstone Chocolates
- Walk down Magnolia Avenue
- Support local shops
Travel tip #1: Admire the gorgeous Spanish colonial architecture and cobblestone streets by walking around the city center. Try to avoid walking during mid-day to avoid the heat and getting a sunburn!
Saint Augustine Food Recommendations
- St. Augustine Coffee House
- Pizza Time
- Harry’s Seafood, Bar & Grille
- The Hyppo Gourmet Ice Pops
- Auggie’s Mini Donuts
Travel tip #2: These places are only a few that my friend and I tried while in Saint Augustine. There are plenty more phenomenal restaurants, upscale eateries, taverns, and cafes to try! Ask a local for their opinion on where to eat–they’re all quite helpful and friendly.
Getting to Saint Augustine
Saint Augustine is approximately two to two and a half hours away by car from Orlando or less than an hour’s drive from Jacksonville. Both of these cities also have major airports if you’re flying into Florida to visit. Additionally, the small yet convenient Northeast Florida Regional Airport is several miles outside of the city for even easier access.
I recommend visiting during low season if possible to avoid the summer heat, larger crowds, and influx of tourists. January was a really nice time to visit–although it can be a little cool in the evenings–but March through May typically experience warmer weather. If you have time, stay over for a night in one of the quaint bed and breakfasts in the city center to make the trip even better!
Peace & happy travels,
