Hadongkwan Tom Kang is known for their simple but delicious beef bone soup, called “Gomtang”. It has been in business for over 80 years, before Myeongdong became the bustling shopping district it is today. In 2018, their soup was awarded a Michelin Bibendum face.
About Hadongkwan’s Soup
Hadongkwan uses high grade ingredients and no artificial flavorings in their food, giving all their dishes a very natural and clean taste. The signature dish is their regular Gomtang, traditional beef soup with rice (12,000KRW/~$11.50 USD). If you’re looking for something with more texture, try their speciality soup that includes pieces of tripe (15,000KRW/~$13.00 USD). I ordered their Special Gomtang and was not disappointed in the slightest. The clear broth was extremely flavorful, which was enhanced by the chewy beef and tripe slices. No matter which you choose to order, their soup is a wonderful meal on a chilly day in Seoul!
How To Eat at Hadongkwan
- Upon entering the restaurant, you will be prompted to order at the front desk.
- Order your soup and pay.
- Sit at the table the waitstaff directs you to.
- Enjoy your soup, served with complimentary kimchi, kimchi radish, and tea. Add spring onion, salt, and pepper to your preference—it should all be on the table.
- Refill your own tea—it’s unlimited and self-serve.
- Call the waitstaff over if you would like more broth. You can have as many broth refills as you would like.
Travel tip: It’s best to visit the restaurant on a weekday morning, as weekends are notoriously crowded and wait times can be extensive.
